Writing
As writers at The Manor, we aspire to write with purpose, clarity and passion. We believe that an author lives within us and we achieve the skills to express ideas and communicate effectively.
Each year group follows the National Curriculum objectives for Writing. From these, teachers take Key Performance Indicators, which they use to track children’s progress and attainment over the year. Spellings are taught based on the rules in the National Curriculum.
At The Manor, we use a range of approaches to teach the different strands of writing. To teach the structures and variety of elements of fiction writing, we use The Write Stuff approach. This approach allows the children to learn through teacher modelling, shared writing and independent work through a scaffolded and supported series of sessions culminating in a final piece of independent writing. Throughout the year, there are many other opportunities for the children to utilise their story writing skills such as independent writing tasks, Creative Writing weeks and national/school writing competitions. The children also have poetry writing opportunities carefully planned throughout the year.
Whilst fiction writing equips children with creative and expressive skills, non-fiction allows children to explore, analyse and dissect the many other genres of writing. Teachers plan and deliver cross-curricular writing which, where appropriate, may be based on the termly topics and / or class book. By the end of their time at The Manor, children are exposed to a variety of non-fiction genres and can write with a clear purpose and audience in mind.
