A child’s learning journey at The Manor begins in our Reception class (Antarctica).  From the day your child first walks into school, we welcome and support them to enjoy school and to ‘shine like stars’ in their own way.  We recognise that all children are unique and deserve to be valued and celebrated.  We help the children to develop positive relationships with trusted adults in school and support them to develop these with their peers.  We have a fantastic learning environment, which allows children to thrive and develop across the whole curriculum.  Our curriculum is taught through a range of whole class teacher-led sessions, smaller adult led group activities, one-to-one teaching and independent learning opportunities through play.

In Antarctica Class, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which is split into 7 areas.

Communication and Language

We provide a language-rich environment full of stories, rhymes, conversation and role play.  Our daily story sharing time allows children to become absorbed in books and we expose all children to a wide-range of vocabulary and encourage them to communicate their thoughts through discussions and follow up activities.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Warm supportive relationships with adults underpin all we do in our Reception classes. We help children to understand and manage their own feelings and to recognise the feelings of others. We focus on the importance of keeping ourselves healthy and managing our own personal needs independently. We support children to make good friendships, cooperate and manage conflict during their interactions with others.

Physical Development

We are always active in Antarctica Class. We have a large outside space filled with opportunities to run, jump and dance. We also have PE sessions and Forest School sessions regularly to allow children to explore moving their bodies in a variety of ways.In addition to developing gross motor skills, we work on helping children develop their fine motor skills by using scissors, paintbrushes, small toys and a range of drawing implements.

Literacy

We love stories and books in Reception! We help children develop their language comprehension through reading to them and discussing anything and everything that they are interested in.  We begin the children’s reading journey by starting the Manor Phonics scheme which encourages children to learn sounds and blend them to read words. We also teach letter formation for each sound to enable children to begin to communicate through writing

Mathematics

Our main focus in Early Years Maths is on understanding the numbers 0 – 10 really well.  We focus on what these numbers mean, how we can represent them, how different numbers are composed and begin to identify patterns such as odd and even.  We also look at pattern and shape and counting up to 30.

Understanding the world.

We help children to make sense of the physical world around them and gain a deeper understanding of their community.  We spend lots of our time in the natural world and recognising the changes that happen in nature.  We also try to raise children’s awareness of the diversity of our world and to recognise that not everybody lives a life like theirs.

Expressive Arts and Design

We truly believe that every child is an artist and encourage them to be creative and imaginative and make art that they enjoy producing.  We offer many opportunities to engage with a range of materials and share art with them, encouraging them to reflect on their opinions of what they see.
